Keep the planners happy...
We embraced an interesting challenge to build social housing in a conservation area; it was critical that the new structure would blend in with the surroundings, and had to be cleverly designed in a way which would complement the local vernacular of random York stone with clay pantile roofs. The brief demanded a well insulated building which comprised individual apartments for elderly locals. We think we did rather well…

Timber frame
Timber frame was chosen in order to achieve thermal performance and minimise running costs. We engineered the structure by also designing in steelwork, allowing the stonework to appear on the gable wall as specified by planners. The interior was also designed to maintain the ‘olde world’ feel of the outside of the building, by keeping the headroom as low as possible within building regulations by using a variety of truss designs.
